Almost nine years ago when I got married in Victoria it took me nearly two years to figure out how to keep my Wedding under budget at the time. I didn't want to spend a lot on the day. Instead my then fiance Stephen and I wanted to go on a long backpacking trip through Europe, so we were saving our money for this adventure honeymoon, rather than on a big traditional wedding. It was a struggle but we eventually found a cute chapel to get married in, and decided to have a cocktail reception instead of a sit down banquet, and it turned out to be our dream wedding under budget.
A lot has changed in the Wedding industry in Victoria in nine years. Some things are easier to plan because of Instagram and Pinterest, which didn't exist when I was planning my wedding day. But social media apps haven't exactly helped to keep the cost of a wedding down. Quite the opposite. The cost of a Wedding back in 2015 was nearing $30,000 according to WeddingBells.ca. That figure has likely gone up in the past three years.
What's the solution to this problem? The sharing economy! When I first read about Pop Up Weddings that are growing in popularity I thought, "I wish I had this option 9 years ago"! So I passed along the idea to two friends and business collaborators of mine Sarah Scott of Botanic Creative, and Julia Loglisci of Julia Juglisci Photography. We sat down together over coffee early one morning at Union Pacific coffee in China Town and agreed that we could absolutely make this happen!
A few months later, a photoshoot later, a visit to the bank, lots of writing, and editing, and preparing... Here we are, ready to launch this amazing new affordable elopement style sharing service in Victoria, BC! For more details visit our new website!
Below are some shots from a styled photoshoot we designed and executed back in June to highlight the vision of Sarah's floral design, and give you a strong idea of what to expect on the day of. We will have two alters set up at The Gardens at HCP. One in classic creams overlooking the lake. And the second more boho chic in the Japanese Zen Garden with jewel-toned coloured flowers. Each couple will have the choice between one or the other style of wedding ceremony for one hour (first come first serve), and will be sharing their alter with 9 other couples through the day. We will provide you with the alter, flowers, decor, an officiant to marry you, a professional photographer to capture the ceremony and provide you with a short formal photoshoot, and then a bottle of champagne and some custom made treats by the talented Allison Shelnud.
