The Newcomer Project \ Part 3

June 29, 2018

Naji and Hoda brought their adorable 2-year-old son from Iran 5 years ago. Today he is a thriving second grader with a nearly 2-year-old siser, who is steals the show almost always. This family was so much fun to photograph. They were extremely affectionate with each other and so comfortable having their picture taken.

While I was getting to know Naji I asked him a lot of questions about why he came to Canada, what life in Victoria is like for him and his family as newcomers. And I asked him if he would ever consider going back to Iran. Naji looked at his beautiful daughter and said to me, "if I go back my daughter would not be allowed to ride a bike." Her rights and privileges as a Canadian are too valuable to risk, despite leaving behind all of their extended family in Iran.

It's so fascinating to me to learn about other countries from the perspective of someone who was born and raised in that unique culture. Naji has inspired me to understand more about the ancient and rich history of Iran and the Middle East.
